Description:
The Economic and Financial Committee of the General Assembly (ECOFIN) serves as one of the primary forums for the members of the United Nations to tackle the global financial issues that face the global economy. At MUNUC XXIV, delegates of ECOFIN will debate and discuss issues that speak to the nature of our present-day global economy. This is evident in the way in which black market dealings or debt crises in one corner of the world can profoundly affect the economic well-being in another corner. The first topic, “Underground Economies,” will force ECOFIN to determine the role of the United Nations in regulating largely-internal economic activities. Beyond that, it will also spark debate over how to incentivize the use of traditional markets and how to track black market dealers. The second topic, “Integration of the Sub-Saharan Least Developed Countries into the World Economy,” will require ECOFIN to look at how to bolster infrastructure, human capital, and financing in Sub-Saharan Africa. The deliberation will also include the relationship between the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the issues encountered in the Least Developed Countries. Despite their different focuses, both ECOFIN topics should provide for lively discussion and debate for delegates at MUNUC XXIV.
