Description:
The Organization of American States is the chief regional organization for the thirty-five nations of the Americas. The OAS is responsible for fostering free trade, promoting democracy and human rights, and providing a forum for regional communication and diplomacy. At MUNUC XXIV delegates will face two major regional issues. First, OAS will need to consider how to deal with the corrosive social effects of the drug trade, which stretches from the Andes to the United States and Canada. Addiction, gang violence, and economic inequality are all linked to the flow of drugs; each of these issues requires a careful, effective response from the OAS. Second, the OAS will examine the persistent problem of gender imbalances in employment. Women across the region face unequal pay, discrimination, and the need to balance work with household responsibilities. Delegates will have the chance to tackle these problems and improve the lives of people throughout the region.
